Bereaved Jewish Families of Ontario
Providing Support Following the Death of a Child

OUR PROGRAMS
Support/Self-help Groups

You don't have to be alone in your grief... "Support Groups? Not Me!"....
Support groups CAN be helpful:

- A group will give you a sense of belonging. The acute sense of being alone may be lessened.
- A group can provide the understanding you need if you find that the interaction with your family & friends is inadequate. (Most people do!)
- Sharing your experience of grief will help you to understand you are normal.
- You will be able to express yourself in an environment where nobody is going to ask when you are going to get over it!
- You will receive practical advice, concrete guidance and encouragement from other members of the group.

Support/Self-Help Groups provide a safe place to be with people who understand what you are experiencing and how you feel. Support groups can ease a parent's pain as you share your feelings with one another and help each other to begin the healing process. Support groups offer understanding, support and encouragement.

Bereaved Jewish Families of Ontario Support/Self-Help Groups are facilitated by two volunteers who are themselves bereaved and who have been through a volunteer training program. The peer facilitators receive support from a social worker at Jewish Family & Child Service of Toronto. There are 8 2-hour sessions for each support group.

Family Nights
Family Nights take place several times during the year and are open to the entire community. A Family Night program is an ideal time to bring extended family and friends to help them to further understand your grief. Family Nights are designed as another opportunity to provide support and education around the issue of bereavement. Family Nights feature inspirational speakers who may be professionals in the field of bereavement, bereaved parents, authors etc. It is a time to come together to learn from the experiences of others, to share and to be supported. Often Family Nights take place around the major holidays in the Jewish calendar and provide coping strategies for these particularly difficult times.
Family Night information is posted on this website and also is advertised in The Canadian Jewish News.

Jewish Hospice Program
Bereaved Jewish Families of Ontario supports the Jewish Hospice program through generous donations. The Jewish Hospice program provides a team of support to terminally ill patients and their families. The Jewish Hospice program is sensitive to religious and spiritual traditions and encourages rabbinic counselling, consultation and visitation to the family.
